Legacies Change Lives
Elizabeth Hileman is many things to many people. A first-generation graduate, she is a non-traditional student, a single mother of three teenage boys and a current graduate student majoring in reading specialization. Beth is also the recipient of the Dr. Margaret J. Forsythe Graduate Scholarship in Education.
Dr. Forsythe was the dean of women at Kent State in the late 1950's who passed away in 2010. Her legacy scholarship was created by her friend, alumna Mary Jean Roach '60, '63, to encourage and support graduate students majoring in education. Mary Jean has also designated it in her estate plans. That support has meant a great deal to Beth. "Personally, this scholarship means so much," she says. "My boys watched me work my tail off to get my undergraduate degree. When I decided to get my Master's I talked to them about the sacrifices we as a family would need to make. When I found out I received the scholarship, I was able to tell the boys that there would not be as many sacrifices. I have always told them that college was necessary in order to be successful; which has led to conversations about how to pay for it. This scholarship enabled me to show them that people really do care."
Beth is certain that teaching is her purpose in life. "The support I've received is helping me be better, to help more people. For every child I help, my scholarship lingers in the background as a catalyst," she says. "Giving back is all about how you change those you come into contact with. I hope that my legacy is long and full of people who say that I changed their lives by teaching them how to read."
